Flühli glassworks –
tradition and craftsmanship.
Glassmaking has been part of Flühli’s story since 1723. Founded that year, the glassworks became one of Central Switzerland’s most important glass producers. Timber for the furnaces, quartz sand and limestone came from the surrounding region. Its finished glassware travelled throughout Switzerland and abroad.
Traditional Flühli glass was known for its greenish tint, created by iron oxides in the quartz sand. The glassworks made drinking vessels, bottles and window glass. Elaborately engraved pieces became sought-after luxury items – small treasures shaped by skill and patience.
More than a glassworks.
The glassworks was also a social centre, shaping working life and the community in Flühli for generations. Industrialisation brought change: modern production methods and dwindling timber supplies put pressure on the traditional craft. In 1866, the glassworks closed.
Its legacy lives on. The glass museum in Flühli offers an insight into historic glassmaking, and here at the Kurhaus you can discover selected original pieces up close. Take a moment to look at their delicate lines, decoration and reflections – each piece has a story to tell.

A place to find your calm.
Since 1899.
Alongside its glassmaking tradition, Flühli became known for its sulphur springs. In the 19th century, the village grew into a popular spa destination, attracting visitors who sought the healing properties attributed to its sulphurous water.
The magnificent Kurhaus Flühli opened in 1899. This Belle Époque landmark welcomed guests from across Europe seeking rest and recovery. That history is still part of the house today – adding something special to your time with us.
